A sand dollar - showing what it looks like on top and underneath
It is said that sand dollars are money of mermaids washed up from the deep
however, in reality, this fragile disk is the skeleton of a marine animal known
as an Echinoid. When alive, the sand dollar has a velvety covering of
minute spines. The spines on the flattened underside allows it to burrow
through the sand. Sand dollars live on top or just beneath the surface of
sandy areas. The best time for collecting them are after a storm when the
dead ones are washed ashore
